Yoga has gained a lot of popularity in the past decade. Many people who have become familiar with yoga have compared it to ballet. While the comparison is not exactly perfect, it points out that there are quite a few similarities in both types of exercise. Yoga may look extremely difficult for those who watch from afar; just like ballet. However, both the exercises are easy to practice as long as you are committed to it and are willing to put in sufficient time for practice.
How Yoga Works
Yoga is based on the principle that the correct way of breathing can cure all the problems that can happen in ones body. The science that backs this exercise originates in ancient India and the principles it follows are slowly recognized as correct by modern science. Yoga is basically a set of postures, or asanas which have to be practiced in order to achieve a healthy body and mind.
Good yoga posture is intended to correct the problems of health by correcting the flow of breath and energy in the body. There are many types of proper yoga posture in the repertoire of yoga; each one specially meant to address a certain problem or set of problems. The modern medicines has started acknowledging the capacity and ability of yoga to control stress, blood pressure, promote muscle coordination, digestion, flexibility of joints and back, and cure depression.
Each yoga posture move is named after animals or plants that it imitates; hence you will have the tree asana, the frog asana, the cat asana, the eagle asana and do so on. It is not necessary for everyone to learn each and every yoga posture they are taught. You actually should concentrate in practicing that asana that suits your health condition best. Regular practice could reduce or even eliminate the cause of your health distress.
Once you learn your favorite yoga posture (or postures) then you can practice at home as well. There are many yoga DVDs and training videos which will guide you when you practice alone. However, it is always good to practice first under the professional guidance of a guru (yoga teacher) so as to be sure you are practicing correctly. Once you are comfortable with the yoga posture that is recommended for you, you can continue to practice the asanas that you love in the comfort of your own home.
